Refocusing and Expanding

Refocusing AND expanding?  How exactly does one do that??

When I started this blog, I said I intended to talk about Leadership as defined as personal and professional excellence examined through the lens of entrepreneurship.  Nice words, but what does that really mean?

Exactly.

I don’t know if any of you have written a blog before, but there is the concept in the blogging world of “finding your voice”.  What this means is that every blogger and every blog has it’s own unique style, cadence and content, that typically develops over time.  Having written two other blogs, both fairly long-term, I assumed I wouldn’t have to “find” my voice for this blog, it would just be there.

The plain truth is we all know that planning is one thing, execution is quite another.  To put an entrepreneurial spin on it, everyone knows business plan sales forecasts are largely imaginary, but at least they get the conversation pointed in the right direction.

So now, after a month or so of writing, reflection and tinkering, I find some changes are in order.

The Re-Focus

Simply put, this blog will focus on Personal Excellence.

I’m not going to try to define personal excellence.  Maybe I’m naive but it seems fairly self-explanatory.  Besides, while each of us may struggle to define personal excellence, we all know whether it’s something we aspire to.  So let’s forget about trying to figure out what it is and talk about how to get there.

Of course, any discussion of excellence will spill over into Leadership.  People aspiring to excellence and exhibiting excellence are often leaders.  Being a leader doesn’t necessarily mean you run a Fortune 500 company, you could simply be the “go-to” person in your department, or a division manager known for consistently creative and well run campaigns, or just the person who always gets their status reports in on time with no grammar errors.  Excellence is relative and personal.

The Expansion

Somewhere along the way I forgot that blogs were supposed to be personal and I treated this one too much like a cross between a science experiment and a new business start-up.  Well, we’re going to change that.

This blog is meant to be an examination of certain personal growth themes, but it is also intended to be a reflection of my goals, thoughts and to a certain extent my life.

I’ve been fortunate to have had a very rich life so far.  I’ve traveled the world, I’ve had experience in virtually every business function there is, I’m interested in just about everything, and I’m not afraid to try much at least once.  Therefore, you will start to see more posts on a much wider range of topics than you’ve seen so far.  Hopefully, the blog will become much more interesting and you may even learn something; at least have a chuckle on my behalf.

We’re also going to start talking a bit more about entrepreneurship.  As I’ve indicated before, I’ve been a frustrated entrepreneur my whole life and it is with a certain sense of irony I now find myself working in a technology incubator helping high growth potential technology companies accelerate toward commercialization and revenue generation.  We could all learn a lot from entrepreneurs, and they could learn a lot from us.

So I’ll be writing articles from time to time that will be of specific interest to entrepreneurs.  My promise is to always create a bridge back to personal excellence and how we can all take a lesson away for personal growth.  At least that’s the plan!

So what’s changed?

Really nothing although hopefully this blog will be less serious, more insightful, and more useful to more people.  I know it will be more fun for me to write.

I look forward to your comments and our future discussions.
