3 from the conference
The trade association for my industry is the National Business Incubation Association (NBIA). Each year they hold two major events; a Fall training conference, and a Spring conference more focused on the business of incubation. Of all the conferences I’ve attended in my career, these NBIA conferences are the best run and most valuable of any I’ve attended. I think part of the reason is that all the sessions are run by actual practitioners.
Last year I wrote about the one page strategic plan and the 1 question survey, two great take-aways from the Fall conference. That post ended up being fairly popular and still receives a good amount of traffic from searches on “one page strategic planning”.
This year’s conference didn’t yield anything as dramatic. However, three comments from throughout the conference really struck home to me in the context of entrepreneurship. I wanted to share them with you and leave you to take away from them whatever message hits home.
The motto of one of the presenting business incubators:
Get in, get good, get out!
A incubator manager talking about the need for professional coaching in the incubator:
Entrepreneurs are good at three things: making a product, selling a product, and running a business. The thing is, any particular entrepreneur is only ever really good at one of those.
Finally, another incubator manager from a rural area:
It doesn’t matter where you’re located, there’s no reason you can’t be world-class.
